Tennis Icon Li Na Officially Announces Retirement

Excerpt from her official Facebook letter (read the full letter) :

My dear friends,

For close to fifteen years, we’ve been a part of each other’s lives. As a tennis player representing China on the global stage, I’ve trekked around the world playing hundreds of matches on the WTA tour, for China’s Fed Cup team, at the National Games and at several Olympic Games. You’ve always been there for me, supporting me, cheering me on, and encouraging me to reach my potential.

Representing China on the tennis court was an extraordinary privilege and a true honor. Having the unique opportunity to effectively bring more attention to the sport of tennis in China and all over Asia is something I will cherish forever. But in sport, just like in life, all great things must come to an end.

2014 has become one of the most significant years in my career and my life. This year was full of amazing highlights, which included winning my second Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open and sharing the extraordinary experience with my country, my team, my husband and my fans. It was also a year filled with difficult moments, such as having to deal with the inevitable - making the decision to end my professional tennis career.

The amazing moment in Australia was filled with joy, happiness and extraordinary sense of accomplishment. The task of finally making a decision to hang up my racquet felt a lot more difficult than winning seven matches in a row in the Australian heat. It took me several agonizing months to finally come to the decision that my chronic injuries will never again let me be the tennis player that I can be. Walking away from the sport, effective immediately, is the right decision for me and my family.

I’m really going to miss you a lot. Your smile, your tennis- everything. The way you never fail to make everyone laugh during your interviews. How your backhand is such a joy to watch in your good days. How there are days where your tennis is t e r r i b l e and sob, why. How you name your rackets Li Na #1 to Li Na #6. ALSO, BEST SPEECH GIVER ON BOTH TOURS, not gonna lie.

You’re the best champion we can ask for, and not just because you’ve won many titles, and have multiple slams. Who you are, what you represent- it’s bigger than the sport. It’s been a journey being your fan. I want to be selfish and say I want you to never stop playing tennis, but you’ve given a lot of happiness to me (and sadness, also see: frustration, sigh) and I can’t ask for more.

I wish you all the best. Xie xie, Empress Li. Xie xie.

this was what a filler episode SHOULD be, it may not have furthered the plot, but it did highlight the characters and deepen our understanding of them

Yay! More questions! :)

.

5. Share one of your strengths.

Mmmmm… Hard to say, actually. I think other people can say this better than I can, I don’t really know. I think I do alright with fast-paced videos. Not exactly fast-paced per se, but with songs with a clear beat to follow. I’m very beat-driven, if that makes any sense, that’s why slower-paced videos are a challenge to me, because usually slow songs don’t really have a marked beat to follow.

But then again there’s A Blip In Time, which didn’t really have a beat and yet it was one of the easiest vids to do! But I suppose that one was the exception to the rule.

lol Did any of that make any sense to you?

.

7. Point to a section from one of your favourite vids you’ve made and explain why you’re proud of it.

Oh wow! That’s interesting.

I will be forever proud of picking “Tubthumping” for Jack in Tenth Doctor: The Musical, and “Fuck you” for Martha… But I guess that’s not really what the question is, is it? Well…

The first one that comes to mind is a section from an X-Men First Class vid about Erik and Charles that I never got to finish (I still hope to, though. Maybe I will now with Days of Future Past… though I haven’t actually seen it yet - DON’T JUDGE ME!). It’s a section at the beginning that I found visually very interesting and I give myself a pat on the back every time I watch my WIP. But you have no idea what it is I’m talking about, so that doesn’t count…

Basically I like it when a cut is barely noticeable. It’s very tricky to do and I rarely manage it, but one recent example I can think of is in Moves Like Jaeger, which has a lot of little bits I’m proud of, but particularly at 2:52 in the “Kiss me ’til you’re drunk and I’ll show you”. I don’t know why, but I like how those two shots fit together with the song… I wish I could go on a lengthy exposition of why I think that cut was good and fill your head with knowledge, but I’m a derp that can only go “Hey, I think that was good, kinda?” *blushes*

Above and Below is one of my favourite vids I made and it’s full of sections I’m proud of. I really like the ones that show Jack desperately trying to stay with the Doctor but being left behind. I don’t know how well I managed to convey that to the viewers, but for instance at 0:57, there’s a section that tries to show that, Jack running, trying to reach the Doctor and failing.

1:22 is also one section I really like, the juxtaposition of Jack teleporting away and the TARDIS flying away, and they start off together but by the end, Jack is falling behind once again.

2:50 I like because once again it deals with Jack’s emotions regarding the Doctor. While I love David Tennant and John Barrowman working together, I always loved the fact that it’s in fact Nine who’s Jack’s Doctor, not Ten. And Ten looks at him as if he’s a mistake, which I’m sure hurts Jack a lot, since he’s spent years of his life trying to go back to the Doctor.

3:00 is a really quick sequenced that I think exemplified what I believe was inherently wrong with Ten by the end of his run. He viewed himself as a saviour, but he was far from it; he was in fact going in the exact opposite direction. So that was a bit of a metaphorical representation, the Doctor being flown to heavens by angels, then crashing down to reality. It was also a bit of a criticism from my part of how I felt the show was dealing with the character of the Doctor, as this sort of god-like figure, which I never bought.

haha WOW that was long! Turns out I had more to say than I realized. Ummm… yeah, those are a few sections that come to mind.

.

9. Which vid was the easiest to make?

I answered it here. ;)

But if you want another one that was quite easy: Foundations. I remember I was editing All My Days and then this idea hit me for a Martha vid and I couldn’t let go, then ended up editing those two pretty much at the same time. It was quite a good week of Doctor Who vidding for me, since I Am A Scientist was done in that same week, if I’m not mistaken. If not, it was the following week.

Anyway, Foundations flowed really well and I liked doing it opposite All My Days. One was a relationship vid about Rose and the Doctor, the other was more of a funny one about Martha… though it does get serious by the end, and it does focus on a relationship. But All My Days was more general, and Foundations was specifically about Martha’s POV.

I ended up liking Foundations more than All My Days, even though it was supposed to be the secondary vid, because I think there’s an extra layer to it that the other one doesn’t have. It’s funny but also touching in a way, and heartbreaking, because it deals with Martha in a situation where she just can’t win. She loves this guy who doesn’t see her, and when he does it’s always as secondary to someone else he’s pining for (Rose).

I believe Foundations planted the seed in my head of what would later become the “Fuck You“ section in Tenth Doctor: The Musical. ;)

.

32. Talk about your current vids in progress.

Well, currently I’m working on one vid and one vid only: Eleventh Doctor: The Musical. I was hoping to edit a Farscape vid before finishing it, and I still might.

I still need to put the whole thing together, but many sections are already planned out. I have to say I’m quite proud of River’s theme. I was getting worried because some of the ideas I had were becoming memes on Tumblr before I ever said anything, so I was wondering if people would think I was stealing their ideas (basically Amy’s theme and Rory’s theme), but I’ve yet to see someone pair River with the song I have for her, so I’m quite pleased with that. ^^

And the one I have for The Silence. I like that one a lot. :D

There’s also one little section that I’m wondering how I’m going to fit into the whole thing, but I’m guessing it can always be another bonus track at the end. :P

And once again, this will only help to show how my musical knowledge barely goes beyond the 90’s.
